If you are over 40 and following the same training plan structure you used at 28, there is a good chance you are not undertrained. You are under-recovered.
Most plans, whether pulled from a forum, a generic app, or a template built for a general audience, are built around a simple assumption: stress plus rest equals adaptation, and rest is a fixed, small variable that does not change much from athlete to athlete. That assumption breaks down as you age, and it breaks down in a specific, measurable way.
The mitochondria don’t care about your motivation
John Holloszy’s foundational work on exercise-induced mitochondrial biogenesis showed decades ago that endurance adaptation is, at its core, a cellular repair and rebuilding process. Training breaks things down. Recovery is where the rebuilding happens, at the mitochondrial level, and that rebuilding capacity is not constant across a lifetime.
As we age, several things change that directly affect this repair process: mitochondrial density and efficiency decline, protein synthesis rates slow, and the inflammatory response to a hard session takes longer to resolve. None of this means training stops working after 40. It means the dose-response relationship shifts. The same session that took 24 hours to recover from at 28 might genuinely need 48 to 72 hours at 45, and no amount of discipline changes that biology.

Why ‘just add more recovery days’ misses the point
The common fix people reach for is simply inserting more rest days into an existing plan. This is better than nothing, but it treats recovery as a scheduling problem rather than a physiological one. Two athletes with identical rest days on paper can be in completely different recovery states depending on sleep quality, life stress, training history, and how well their plan accounts for cumulative fatigue rather than single-session fatigue.
This is where Seiler’s polarised training research becomes genuinely useful for masters athletes specifically, not just as a general training philosophy. The 80/20 model, done properly, is partly a recovery strategy in disguise. Keeping the large majority of training truly easy is what protects the recovery capacity needed for the sessions that matter. Most masters athletes we see are not doing 80/20. They are doing 60/40 at best, with too much of their “easy” riding sitting in a grey zone that is hard enough to blunt recovery but not hard enough to drive real adaptation.

What this means for how a plan should actually be built
For an athlete over 40, a training plan needs to treat recovery as a primary variable to be managed, not a gap to be filled in afterward. In practice that looks like:
- Recovery windows sized to the individual, not the calendar. A 45 year old with a demanding job and broken sleep needs a different taper into a hard block than someone with the same FTP but more life bandwidth.
- Genuinely easy days that stay easy. Not “moderate effort,” not “just spinning the legs a bit harder than planned.” Low enough that it does not compete with the recovery debt from the last hard session.
- Monitoring that catches under-recovery before it shows up as a bad result. Resting heart rate trends, HRV, and subjective fatigue scores matter more here than they do for a 25 year old, because the warning window before a masters athlete tips into overreaching is often shorter.
- Periodisation that respects a longer adaptation timeline. The fitness is still there to be built. It typically arrives on a longer runway than it did fifteen years ago, and plans that ignore this just produce athletes who are permanently one session away from feeling flat.
None of this is a reason to train less hard. It is a reason to train more precisely.
The plan matters more than the willpower
Masters athletes are rarely short on discipline. Most of the riders we coach could push through more sessions than their body can currently absorb, and that is exactly the problem. A plan that does not account for the biology of ageing recovery will eventually get the result it is built to get: a fit-looking training log and a flat, fatigued athlete underperforming relative to the work they have put in.
If your current plan has not changed its approach to recovery since you were in your twenties, it is worth asking whether it was ever built with you in mind.
